John William Strutt's father was the second Baron Rayleigh of Terling Place, Witham, in the county of Essex. His mother was Clara Elizabeth Latouche Vicars. John William Strutt had younger siblings, Clara, Richard, Charles, and Edward. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in October 1861 where he took the mathematical Tripos.
